Unilever Teams Up with NatureMetrics for Regenerative Farming

Global conglomerate Unilever has joined forces with UK-based NatureMetrics to integrate environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies into its supply chain for promoting regenerative farming practices. Through eDNA sampling, Unilever aims to assess biodiversity changes in soil and insect populations across key locations in Argentina, Canada, the UK, and Europe. The partnership underscores Unilever's commitment to sustainable sourcing and biodiversity conservation.

Unilever's vast land holdings, spanning approximately 4 million hectares, are pivotal for cultivating raw materials used in its products. With the launch of its regenerative agriculture program in 2022 and subsequent initiatives such as the Regenerating Together framework, Unilever is spearheading efforts to advance sustainable agriculture globally. The collaboration with NatureMetrics further solidifies its dedication to environmental stewardship.

NatureMetrics' eDNA technology offers a non-invasive approach to monitoring biodiversity uplifts by analyzing DNA samples from the environment. By detecting a wide range of organisms without disturbing habitats, this technology provides valuable insights for conservation efforts. Through this partnership, Unilever aims to leverage data-driven decision-making to enhance its regenerative agriculture practices.

Tom Ludwig, head of onshore industries at NatureMetrics, emphasizes the significance of data in driving sustainability initiatives. He highlights how the data captured through eDNA sampling serves as a universal language for stakeholders throughout the supply chain, empowering them to make informed choices. Joe Huddart, biodiversity solutions engineer at NatureMetrics, underscores the transformative potential of involving more individuals in environmental monitoring activities.

As Unilever and NatureMetrics embark on this collaborative journey, their shared vision for sustainable agriculture stands as a beacon of hope for fostering biodiversity conservation and promoting regenerative practices worldwide.
