Verra Simplifies Aviation Carbon Compliance with Updated CORSIA Labels

Verra has released its updated CORSIA Label Guidance to streamline compliance with aviation carbon offset requirements. This announcement builds on the milestone achieved in December 2024, when the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) extended Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program’s eligibility under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) to the First Phase (2024–2026).

CORSIA is a global initiative designed to cap international aviation emissions at 2020 levels. Airlines must offset emissions that exceed their limits by using approved carbon credits that adhere to stringent standards, including sustainable development reporting and safeguards against double-counting.

The new guidance provides detailed instructions for project developers to request CORSIA labels for eligible Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). These labels ensure that credits used under the scheme meet all compliance and transparency requirements. Key criteria include host country authorisation, proper labelling, and mechanisms to prevent double-claiming of emissions reductions.

To simplify processes, Verra has automated updates for VCUs issued during the Pilot Phase, aligning them with the latest standards. Important designations, such as the "CORSIA Eligible Label" and "Article 6 Authorized Label," ensure accurate crediting and compliance.

A commitment to transparency remains central to Verra’s approach. Mitigation outcomes from 2021 onward are carefully monitored to avoid double-counting by airlines and host countries. Verra also enforces compensation mechanisms if host countries withdraw approval, ensuring robust compliance across all scenarios.

This latest development reflects Verra’s dedication to strengthening carbon markets and advancing sustainable aviation. By prioritising transparency and facilitating compliance, the organisation is paving the way for aviation to meet its environmental responsibilities and move toward a more sustainable future.
