Verra Extends Lead in CCP-Approved Methodologies

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has recognised version 5 of Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme and approved 13 of its methodologies under the Core Carbon Principles (CCP). ICVCM announced the decision on 2 September 2026. Verra runs the world’s largest carbon-crediting programme, with about 1.3 billion Verified Carbon Units issued across 2,579 projects in 132 countries.

Under the CCP framework, a credit qualifies for the label only when both the crediting programme and the specific methodology hold ICVCM approval. Recognition of version 5 clears the programme-level requirement for Verra’s current standard.

“ICVCM has recognised the latest version of Verra’s VCM Programme, which was released in December 2025, as meeting the CCP criteria: the highest benchmark of quality in the voluntary carbon market,” ICVCM said.

The 13 approved methodologies, together with the VCS Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ Framework, cover afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation, improved forest management, and REDD+, alongside biochar, rice management, cookstoves, landfill gas, renewable electricity, and coal-mine methane.

Verra now leads the CCP field with 15 approved methodologies, ahead of Isometric on 9, Climate Action Reserve and Gold Standard on 8 each, ACR on 6, and Architecture for REDD+ Transactions on 1. The approvals bring the total recognised across programmes to 47.

Verra released version 5 in December 2025 and completed its full operationalisation in June 2026. The revision tightened non-permanence safeguards, increased baseline checks, strengthened consent rules, and broadened digital and insurance-based alternatives to pooled buffers for managing reversal risk.

The widening roster of CCP-approved methodologies expands the pool of independently verified supply available to buyers as the market standardises around common quality criteria, a shift buyers and registries have worked towards since the framework’s first methodology approvals in 2024.
